What if I have a driver’s licence from another country?

If you are a new resident to Ontario and have a valid driver’s license from your country you can use it for up to 60 days, however if you want to keep driving you must apply for an Ontario License.

You must present a valid foreign driver's license, pass a vision test and a written knowledge test regarding Ontario's traffic rules, pay all applicable fees and provide proof of identity. If you meet these requirements, you can obtain a G1 license. Also, you must provide an adequate proof of foreign driving experience.

The applicants may obtain an authentication document from the originating licensing agency, or from the Embassy, Consulate or High Commissioners’ offices representing the licensing jurisdiction.

The authentication document must be on official letterhead and be written in either English or French.  (If the authentication document is written in languages other than English or French, it must be accompanied by a written translation from a ministry-approved translator).  The authentication document must be dated and presented within six months from the date of issue.

The ministry accepts translations made by a Ministry-approved translator. Ministry-approved translators include non-Canadian embassies, consulates, or high commissioner’s office, but do not include other translators from the country where the licence was issued.

After you have arranged all the necessary documents and have learned the rules of the road signs you can proceed to G1 testing requirements. After successfully passing this level you can proceed to G level of testing. Because of your previous experience you will omit G2 testing.
